Nokia offers free games and more on the Australian ovi store

Nokia has made a number of Gameloft games including Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia available to Australian users free on their Ovi Store (the equivalent of the Apple app store). Until the end of January users with compatible handsets including the E71, N97 and N86 will be able to download the games for free.

There’s also free ringtones, screen savers and wallpapers up for grabs if they tickle your fancy more than games.

To get your free goodies visit the GameLoft special page or load up the Ovi store on your handset (installation instructions and here) and filter the listings for free only.

Pacific Magazines to start printing QR codes

QR codes are 2 dimensional bar codes that can be scanned by your mobile phone and used to visit a website, share a phone number. Basically make it easier for you to interact with an ad. They are huge in Japan where trying to remember or enter a website on your mobile phone is often difficult. Use in Australia has been limited to some trials by Telstra in magazines like those by Pacific Magazines and some in-bus advertising.

With this new deal most ads in Pac Mags titles such as Men’s Health, New Idea, Marie Claire etc will include a call to action and a QR code. Hopefully this will be the start of the QR code revolution in Australia. I find them really easy to use and although you look like a twat trying to scan a code on a bus ceiling I can see huge potential for them to bridge the print to digital gap.

If you can’t wait for the next edition of Men’s Health and want to try out QR codes now then the one above will take you to the front page of this site. Whip out your Telstra QR enabled phone and go to the Myplace menu. If you’re not with Telstra a lot of phones have a reader built in already. Look for barcode reader, multiscanner or something similar. Nokia, Apple, Win Mo and Android all have free applications available to download for their smart phones.

Woolworths supermarket: Australia’s latest mobile telco

Woolworths who along with Coles are one of a pair of companies who run Australia’s largest supermarket chains have just announced that they are getting into the mobile phone game.

Australia’s [l]argest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has announced plans to enter the telecommunications market, offering a no-frills mobile phone service.

Under the plans announced, Woolworths will team with Optus in a pre-paid service that offers a flat rate for voice calls of 15 cents flagfall and 15 cents for every 30 seconds of conversation.

Rather than errecting towers all over the place Woolworths have elected to resell Optus services which many say are already stretched to their limit.

The service provided is pre-paid only and customers can pick up a $2 sim card from Woolworths, Safeway, BIG W or Dick Smith stores.

It’s interesting to note that Woolworths don’t believe that people want data included with their mobile service. It seems unlikely then that any power users will be switching over.
