Hot phones and deals for August
We present a roundup of the best phones for August 2009. As well as the best deals from the top 3 providers in Australia:
1. Nokia N97
Touted by everyone but Nokia as an iPhone killer the N97 is Nokia’s first flag ship touch screen since the 7710. Although not as pretty as the iphone it is certainly more capable – with a high res camera, a multitude of multimedia formats supported and the highly customisable home screen it more than makes up for its lack of beauty. Definitely worth checking out. Currently Optus and Vodafone are carrying the N97, both at a premium price of $79 per month over 24 months, typical of a new phone. We’re not going to recommend one over the other.
2. iPhone 3GS
Apple have just released the updated iPhone available in 16 and 32 gig variants. Faster than the original and capable of video recording. If you were ever wondering when was the best time to buy an iPhone it’s now. Optus will give it to you for $59 a month over 24 months. Which only just clinches Vodafone who are offering it for $69 a month with a bit more data and call allowance.
3. Nokia E71
This phone is truly a work horse – with a QWERTY keyboard, metal construction and a clear high resolution screen you couldn’t fault it. Although it’s been out for a year now there just isn’t much that can beat it in terms of pure functionality. Sure, it’s not as pretty as the iphone but if you’re all about getting the job done then its multiple account support, push email and built in business software can’t be beaten. One of the best sellers world wide this year you won’t be disappointed.
Telstra don’t seem to want to offer this phone on contract, both Optus and Vodafone offer it on the $49 caps neither of which come with data. Hard choice again.
4. HTC Magic
This one’s a marginal recommendation. The HTC Hero will be out by September and we reckon that will have you regretting your purchase of a HTC Magic. Regardless, it must be mentioned as it is still a great phone. One of the biggest complaints about the Android is the lack of MS Exchange support. Well, guess what, HTC added it to this phone. As for deals – this one is an exclusive to Vodafone .. $59 a month with 1 gig of data over 24 months. A great phone.
